About Us

‘Lancashire Secular Humanists’ is the only ‘county-wide’ group for the people of Lancashire who describe themselves as atheists, agnostics, humanists, secularists, rationalists, sceptics, or freethinkers.

We’re also aware that there are many people who, whilst they know they are not ‘religious’; are unsure about what to call themselves but would simply like to meet like minded people.

We assert that because morality is not a gift given to mankind by religion but is in fact founded in human nature itself, there are a huge number of good people who are living perfectly ethical lives without ever feeling the need to seek reassurance in religion.

We meet to discuss social, political, religious, philosophical, scientific, artistic and other issues, and often invite speakers who are experts in their fields.

We also hold social events and visit places of mutual interest.

Warning! It is often said that getting a group of Humanists to agree on anything is like trying to herd cats! This is because we are freethinkers who pride ourselves on being able to make our own minds up. Very probably the only thing you can be sure of if you attend our discussions is that you will meet others who will express their own considered views and then listen, with an open mind, to the views of others. The only given is that we each make sense of the world using reason, experience & shared human values.

That we think that humanity alone can and will continue to find solutions to the worlds problems – so that ‘quality of life’ can be improved for everyone.

That we take responsibility for our own actions.

That we base our opinions on available evidence and our assessment of the outcomes of our actions; not on any dogma or sacred text.

That we have only one life and it is our responsibility to make it a good life and live it to the full without religious or superstitious beliefs and - in seeking to achieve that - help others to do the same.
‘Lancashire Secular Humanists’ is affiliated to the British Humanist Association (BHA); a national organisation representing the interests of all non-religious people throughout the UK.

Committed to human rights, democracy, equality and mutual respect, ‘Lancashire Secular Humanists’ along with the BHA works for an open and inclusive society with freedom of belief and speech, and for an end to the privileged position of religion wherever it occurs.

Consequently we are able to provide a resource for anybody in Lancashire to call on for assistance, advice and support with any issues where they feel they, as individuals, are experiencing prejudice or need to make a stand against an example of religious privilege.

Issues as wide ranging as Education; Transport; Youth groups; The Workplace; The Law; Hospitals; Prisons; The Armed Forces; Palliative Care; Public Buildings; Public Meetings; Broadcasting; Local Government … In fact new and previously unconsidered examples emerge all the time.

Within our group we already have a wealth of experience in dealing with some of these issues and, being part of such a large and respected organisation as the BHA means their influence and expertise is readily and freely available to everyone.

If you have any expertise or experiences that you feel could assist others who are facing similar difficulties; or, indeed, if you yourself are struggling to assert your right to free-thought then you should consider joining Lancashire Secular Humanists because ‘together’ we are more likely to convince others that it is just as important to listen to our voice and consider our views too.
