What Is Humanism?

Humanism is quite simply a philosophy that believes in human effort and ingenuity rather than a predominantly religious outlook based, as it must be, on divine intervention.

Humanists think that this life and this world is all we have and that, like everything else that exists in the natural world, we too are the product of natural processes.

For our understanding of the universe, our search for meaning and our judgments of right and wrong we must rely on our own observation and reasoning.

There are no supernatural powers or sacred texts to guide us, so we have to think for ourselves; make our own rules and take responsibility for our own lives & actions and for the world we live in. We would assert that ethical decisions should be based on reason, experience and compassion.

Everyone has a right to seek happiness and to avoid pain, and the best way to achieve this is to help other people to do the same.

Humanists insist we can live meaningful, decent and moral lives without superstitious or religious beliefs, and that there can be no divine revelation.

For support, wisdom and guidance we must look to one another.

Humanists believe the soundest moral assessments are those based on rational humanist principles.

For this reason we strive to ensure a non-religious viewpoint is presented wherever moral or ethical matters are taught or discussed.
